Please join us on Saturday, April 27th from 10 am to 3pm as we celebrate the 240th Anniversary of the State of Franklin! Travel back in time to 1784 when Greeneville and Greene County were part of North Carolina. The state of Tennessee did not yet exist! As several North Carolina counties (including Greene County) became dissatisfied with North Carolina's governance, they decided to declare independence. The intention was to become the 14th federal state. In 1785, Greeneville was named the permanent capital of the State of Franklin. While the original Capitol is gone, there is a replica cabin building at Bicentennial Park (between Town Hall and the Library). While the State of Franklin only lasted for a few years, it is an important part of our area's heritage and frontier spirit. Learn more about details about the State of Franklin from Greene County Historian, Tim Massey, and other experts. Partner organizations, who will set up informational booths and/or participate in programming, include the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site, the David Crockett Birthplace State Park, Overmountain Victory Trail Association, and others. There will be a presentation about the history of the state at 11:00 am and a mock session at the cabin at 2:00 pm. Children's activities will be available, as well as a food vendor, and more. This event page will be updated with additional details soon!

March 8, 2024: This week recognizes Women Of Aviation Worldwide. We asked Angela Alley, Manager of the Greeneville Municipal Airport, if she could tell us a little bit about her experience in the industry and how young people can get involved in aviation. Her experience might surprise you! Angela said, "My aviation experience is more unconventional and started when I learned to skydive in 2007. This led me to eventually become a tandem skydive instructor and have my own skydiving business for nearly 10 years. In my 17 years as a skydiver, I have over 4,000 jumps and have traveled to many countries to skydive. I have been to Egypt as a tandem instructor twice for events supporting Muslim women to skydive over the Pyramids. My familiarity with the local airport recently led me to become the airport manager, a role in which I am still learning and growing. A good resource for young people would be to attend an EAA Young Eagles event for an introductory flight. Those events are offered about one Saturday per month during the summer starting in May." Photos include one of Angela's passengers on her most recent trip to Egypt in October. The other one shows a wide view of the Pyramids with skydivers above them. Please check back with us or the Greeneville Municipal Airport to learn more about these opportunities!
