Our offices will be closed Monday, September 2nd for Labor Day. Public Works and the landfill will run on a regular schedule. Employees in those departments use their holiday hours on staggered schedules.
There will be a Greeneville City Council meeting on Tuesday, September 3rd at the G. Thomas Love Boardroom at GEA, 110 N College Street, at 4 pm. Among other items, Mayor Cal Doty and council members, Tim Teague and Matt Hensley, will be sworn into their respective elected offices.
FUN FACTS: Did you know that Labor Day was declared a national holiday 130 years ago in 1894? This is the same year that the Roby Fitzgerald Adult Center building was constructed as a public school. Labor Day celebrates the achievements of American workers. It was part of reducing hours for workers from 12- or 16-hour shifts, six days a week, to 8-hour shifts, five days a week. Possibly related, 😁 the phrase, "Thank God It's Friday," was first published in 1904 in a New York newspaper called The Independent, and the first known printed use of the abbreviation "TGIF" was in 1941, according to the Encyclopedia of Slang. 👍

📢 ANNOUNCEMENT: (Dates have been corrected!) Summers Taylor will be doing crosswalk work in the downtown area starting this Thursday. On Thursday flaggers will be directing traffic at the intersections of Cutler/Depot, Irish/Depot, Main/Depot, and College/Depot to re-stamp the crosswalks. The streets will be open, but one lane may be closed, with flaggers directing traffic. Starting next Monday, work will start on painting the crosswalks and certain intersections that will close intersection to all traffic. The scheduled times will be: Monday, Sept 2 – the intersection of Cutler and Depot street. Intersection closed from 6:00 PM to midnight Tuesday, Sept 3 – possibly Wednesday, Sept 4 – Intersection of Irish and Depot. Intersection closed from 6:00 PM to midnight Thursday, Sept 5 – Intersection of College and Depot. Intersection closed from 6:00 PM to midnight Friday, Sept 6 – possibly Monday, Sept 9 – Intersection of Main and Depot. Intersection closed from 6:00 PM to midnight. This schedule could possibly change depending on weather and drying conditions.

The Greeneville/Greene County Library Board of Trustees has an open position serving as a representative for the Town of Greeneville. Appointed members shall serve three-year terms. To be eligible, you must be qualified to vote in an election of the municipality. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, August 27, 2024.

Early voting for the Greeneville election is from July 12 to July 27 at the Election Commission office, 311 CCU Blvd. Hours are 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Mon, Wed, Fri; 8:30 am - 5:30 pm Tues & Thurs; and 8:30 am - 12 pm on Sat. Election Day is Aug. 1. Photo ID is required to vote.

The Police Department's Office (Records) will be closed on Thursday, July 4th, as well as Friday, July 5th.. The office will open back up at 8 a.m. on Monday, July 8th. If anyone is in need of an Officer, please call 911 for emergencies or 423.638.8663 for non-emergencies.

May 15th is Peace Officers Memorial Day. Chaplain Danny Ricker and local leaders held a memorial service at the Greene County Courthouse for fallen officers. We remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty to protect our community.
